New to fish...

Hello, i recently bought a small starter tank (1 gallon tank with a pump and light) I know its nothing crazy, but i was wondering if i could put any other fish besides the female Swordtail i have in there right now. I know its a small tank and i shouldnt clutter it but she looks so lonely, and im not sure what to put it because i dont want to cause problems. There is a small fake plant in there so its not super cluttered. But any help would be wonderful!

To be honest if you want your fish to have any chance of survival, get a bigger tank !!

Read up as much as you can on fish keeping

The fist golden rule of fish keeping is as I have previously stated

Good luck with your fish, its great hobby if you do it right from the beginning

Hope this helps

Im looking for a bigger tank but everythings quite expensive, specially at Petco. There are no local fish/pet stores around here and i dont know much about online shops as what to trust.

Hate to tell you, but 1 gal isn't enough for any fish, really. I'm assuming you have a nano filter?

Any more than a fish larger than 1 inch is going to be in trouble eventually. I understand it may not be economically viable at the moment, but consider getting a far larger tank compared to the 1 gallon.

Ive been on craigslist recently, and found a few 10-20 gallon tanks with everything needed around me for 50-100bucks so i will be soon to get a larger tank. The fish right now seems to be doing fine im always keeping a close eye on her and everything but she needs a bigger tank for some playmates.

Check craigs list..can find some cheap tanks there now and then ;) And walmarts arent even that expensive, upping it to a 10 gallon would give you tons of options, a 1 gallon isnt even really good enough for a betta =X

Thanks for the replys this forum is a great help with everything! I was at walmart and they didnt have anything but filters, and some bigger tanks then im looking for (50+ gallons). Are there any online stores that sell cheap tanks similar to a wholesale type?

Ebay and Aquabid.

Welcome to the forum, first of all.

A swordtail can reach 6 inches in size and will need a larger tank, preferably 20 gallons although a bigger tank is even better as it has plenty of swimming space for the swordtail to roam around.

On the side note, if that swordtail has been around the males, expect her to drop several batches of fry for months.

The only fish that could fit your one gallon tank is a betta.:)

Yes now that i've been doing some real research it seems like i've bought a "betta" tank. This is my first real fish and was a impulse buy and i didn't know that id want to get into fish as much as i thought so i didn't do any real research. Also, the fish might have been around males prior to me buying her, how long would it take IF there is a possiblility of fry?
