hi
remove the rock from the aquarium, attach the moss with either sewing cotton
or use fishing line.but secure it quite tightly so no fish can become intangled
it's not a nice thing to see !

Can I stick it between two rocks where the fish can't get it so it grows out from there?

oh,i don't know to be honest,i've only done it using the sewing cotton.
maybe a week ?
Byron will probably know.
