Preparing my tank?
Thanks to everyone on this forum who have helped me get to this point, couldn't have done it without you.
So far I have a 50 gallon tank doing well with 5 Electric Yellows in it. I have 5 Elongatus Kanchedzas coming in this Tuesday :-D
My question is, the last time I put 5 Electric Yellows in my tank, (yes I know 5 was a bit too much at one time) I had to do water changes daily to keep the ammonia down for around 3 days. Is there anything I can do to prevent this? I didn't want to put in small amounts at a time as I am ordering online and shipping is pricey.
Well, it seems like you like to add the fish directly to the tank. I recomend a QT just because, but if you wanted to (and aren't too worried about your fish haveing diesases, as LM cichlids are often pretty hardy), you could put some in the QT (maybe 20-30g) and some in the main tank.
It would be pretty expensive to setup a QT if you didn't already have one, though. You would still have to do water changes anyway.
In my 10g QT, I added 2 albino cories, and 4 lemon tetras (now a total of 3 AC, 5 LT). The ammonia never rose over 0.1 because it is SO heavily planted. Lake Malawi Cichlids might eat plants, though. Not to mention the very expensive lighting.
Sounds like you were doing it fine. As long as you can handle the fish without the ammonia getting out of hand (and wipeing out your bio-load), and it not overstocked (well, just a tiny bit overstocked for LM AC lol), then sounds fine to me.

There shouldn't be a problem, as this time the tank is "cycled" and once bacteria are established they can multiply to handle additional "food" (ammonia, then nitrite) unlike a new system where they have to become established and this can take days, hence the frequent water changes.
Nitrosomonas bacteria multiply by binary division, each bacterium divides into two bacteria, and this takes about 9 hours in prime conditions (pH mid-7's, temp high 70's). Nitrospira bacteria divide the same but take about 20 hours. So the excess ammonia/nitrite will be minimal for a fairly brief period. And in a 50g tank, you have more water volume than in small tanks which also helps.
