Alien invader eating slime coat off cichlid?!?!?
Just this morning, I realized that there are these little insect-invader things in my tank, and they are eating the slime coat off my beloved tiger oscar, Ozzy! I think it may have happened when I found a cool piece of drift wood while I was camping, took it home boiled it, put it in the tank, but nothing happened. So, many tank makeovers later, I took it out because it didn't fit with what I was creating. A few weeks later, I put it back in, and a billion of these really small dots came flying out of it. I discarded the wood immediately, but the dots have not gone away sense. Except this time, there's 3 times as much. So I went to turn on the tank light this morning, and Ozzy is COVERED in them! Once he managed to shake them off, i saw that there was a spot that was never there before, it was a pale spot, not black or orange. I have no clue what to do about this "invader", but I can wish you all a merry x-mas or hunnika, (spelt wrong), or kwanza. (P.S. The white dots look like tiny lady bugs)
If it were me, I'd break down the whole tank, toss the gravel and decor and start over. But if they're on your fish, that's not going to be much help either.
Sorry I don't have an idea for you but if it's something unknown and you suspect your wood, it's hard to know how to treat it.
Hopefully someone will come along who's seen something similar and has a way to get rid of them. Is it possible to get a few of them out of the tank and take a close up picture or two that you can post here?
