Cleaning filter - How often?

I think I've cleaned the filter in my fluval 3 once in the 8 weeks its been set up.

How often should i clean? I know it should be cleaned in some of the water from the tank etc.

I have the same filter. I take one pad out each week or so and clean it. I don't ever clean the whole thing at once and so far my "plan" seems to be working because my readings have always been:

amonia 0
nirtite 0
nitrate between 5 and 10

since I finished cycling and I have always had clean looking water.

It sounds like a logical plan in all fairness

The problem is, my fluval is "old skool" and has a plastic like honeycomb insert, not the quilt like ones. Kind of like a sponge you know

So i don't think I can get round that

I would say this is dependant upon the tank. My community tank is set up with Flourite and the pads in my eheim get so dirt clogged, it's nearly impossible to clean them after even just a couple of weeks.
