maybe a silly question but will live rock stay alive with out light?
Yes. There could obviously be some diversity of life that is photosynthetic, but the microfauna and bacteria will not require light, which is the basis of 'live" rock.
thanks due to available spaces I had to go with a canister filter. so I will put sum more live rock in there.
or would dry rock mature in there also?
If you do not have a protein skimmer, then pack the canister filter with activated carbon. Carbon absorbs organic acids, which is the next best thing to a skimmer removing organic wastes. Just be sure to give the carbon a good rinse under tap water every week and to replace the carbon monthly.
Live rock would be best placed in the tank or a sump.
ok thanks for the advise :)
