Just asking for trouble? life plants in oscar tank
1 Attachment(s)
We recently procured two amazon sword plants which needed to be put somewhere until the appropriate tank was ready. I had a sandstone decoration with two large holes in it I fit the cottony root bases of the plants into and placed them in my only present running tank, the oscar's. Now, s/he does enjoy tossing hir tank decor around and pulling apart plastic plants so this may have been a herbicidal action but so for s/he just swims through them.

My prediction? She's going to find out how fun it is to tear the leaves all apart and shred the plants. But then again, maybe not. Maybe she'll be the exception to the rule!

+1 to the plant shredding.. However, all fish have their own personalities so its very possible that your plants will be fine. If you got the plants already theres no harm in trying it out. For swords, they root very deep, you may want to try and quarantine the plants in the tank from the oscar until its well established. It will make it hard to uproot and improve its chances of surviving. My amazon sword is ~2ft tall now and i have to exert quite a bit of effort to pull it because its rooted so deep.

The last time I kept Oscars (well technically my brother kept them) they would destroy anything in their tank, uproot plants, broke glass heaters, etc. When he finally got rid of them he was at the point where the tank was just one large oscar and one large pleco. He didn't even have substrate for the last few month because he had gotten lazy. I personally would not try it if you value the plants.
