Angels and gourami?
Hay everyone. I'm thinking about setting up my 50 gallon that's been sitting in my garage because my angel fish have decided to start breeding. 1st, is a 50g tall enough? 18 inches high compared to the 20 inch high tank they are in now. Also could I house then with groumis? I would like to go with larger fish this time rather then all the tetras.
I personally wouldnt mix them because both being antabids it may be risky..
We have fiosh profiles, under the second tab from the left in the blue bar across the top, with information on compatibility for each species. If you check the profile for angelfish (clicking on the shaded name, Pterophyllum scalare, also takes you to that profile) you will note it mentions gourami as unsuitable tankmates. This is because both fish have territorial needs and can (I say can, not always will) be aggressive together.
A 50g is sufficient for breeding a pair of angels; in fact, a 20g tall would work for this [no other fish in the tank obviously]. Only for breeding.
Another point, if there are any other fish in the tank with the angels, the eggs or the fry are very unlikely to survive. Either the other fish will pick them off, or the attempts will stress the angels and they will eat the eggs themselves. Angelfish frequently eat the eggs of the first few spawns regardless, but with other fish pestering them this is almost a certainty. If you want to attempt raising the fry, a separate tank for the angels pair is a must.
