Fin rot?

I'm not sure about this, but I recently bought a betta fish yesterday and he had a rather nasty hole on his top fin.

At first I thought it was nothing more than a nasty battle scar or something along those lines. I picked him out despite his obvious flaws for his beautiful coloring, but I'm worried now. Checking him the next day I noticed that his top fin is now split into two! I'm not sure if he possibly ripped it on the plant that's in his aquarium. ): Or it's possibly because of fin rot, so can someone please help and tell me which one it could be? I would hate to watch another Betta die.

Other than that, he's been perfectly happy and even built a bubble nest.

Its hard to say, but it may be due to fin rot. Are any of his other fins looking like it is caused by fin rot? And also, it looks like your betta's gills are bloody red, is it bleeding there?

No, only his top fin was damaged the rest of him looks alright. I think he may have ripped it off by accident seeing that I found a piece of his fin attached to the plant.

As far as I'm concerned he doesn't seem to be bleeding near the gills, whenever he flares both sides are red, so it may just be his coloring. Although again I'm not entirely sure.
