Using goldfish to get a new tank started.
I have always used cheap, feeder goldfish to condition the water in a new tank and get the bacteria started growing in the under-gravel filter. Now I hear that is a bad idea. I'd love to hear some discussion on this. If it's something I shouldn't do, I need to know that, but at the same time it's a quick, cheap, & easy way to get things started that I'm reluctant to give up.
I think its a matter of preference. Personnaly I would not use fish to cycle a tank, I feel bad for them. I would use plants, and time. I am also someone who gets personally attached to my fish and I am really sad when they die. I couldnt put a fish in knowing full well that it would most likely die. Again, that is just my personal preference and there are many people that have no problem with that, and they are entitled to their way of doing things.
