WC for Discus advise
 

Hi all,

I have a 450 litre tank which is planted and I dose PPS-Pro as ferts. The tank has some angel fish, tetras, corys, and some loaches. I do 100 litre water change per week.

The parameters of the water that I throw away is

Nitrate 12.5
Nitrite 0
Ammonia 0
GH 7
PH 7

Now I have another tank in which i have discus in it. The water parameter are

Nitrate 25
Nitrite 0
Ammonia 0
GH 7
PH 8

Can i do water change with the other 450 litre water's tank to lower nitrate and PH? or better use tap water with parameters

Nitrate 25
Nitrite 0
Ammonia 0
GH 7
PH 8

Please note that I cannot use rain water or RO in this discus tank for now.

Would not use old water for Discus tank. If your Discus are doing OK in water they are in,then tapwater is what I would use. Might perform a bit larger water changes each week and would not worry about 25 ppm Nitrates.

I agree. If they're doing well, why mess with success? The nitrates shouldn't be too much of a problem as long as you're on top of maintenance. I live in an agricultural area where the early rains of the season cause huge nitrate spikes in the tap water (40-50 ppm). I was terrified that my discus would suffer but they were completely unaffected by it. In fact, they were more upset about my increased water changes than the nitrate. :roll:

And what about the PH?

pH is a number that often indicates that water is either acidic or alkaline ,depending on the mineral content GH ,and alkaline reserve KH. Fish don't feel pH but they do feel sudden changes with respect to GH KH.
A stable pH is more important than chasing the ideal pH.

+1. My Discus tank sits at 7.8 and my fish are perfectly healthy and happy. IMHO a nitrAte reading of 25 ppm is no big deal at all. Just never miss a weekly water change to your Discus tank. Fresh clean water (no matter what the PH as long as it's stable) goes a long way as far as long term success with these particular fish. Have you posted pics of yours?? I would LOVE to see them!
