What are these bronze spots on my fish?
I have a 20 gallon tank that includes 2 dalmation mollies, 1 glass fish, 1 dwarf gourami, 1 pleco, and 1 tiger fish. My tank recently just got over ich and now I am noticing problems with my black dalmation mollie. He has developed bronze and brown colored patches all over his body and even on his eyes! I have never seen this before and don't know what it is. The temperature has been raised all week to 85 F since we are just getting over ich. Just tested the water a few days ago and everything was within acceptable limits. Going to do a water change tomorrow. Any advice on what to do or what this is? thanks
Have you looked on a disease chart about something called Velvet? It's a type of parasite that can cause a gold/copperish appearance...
So if it's a parasite, do you treat it the same way you would treat ich?
And if I only notice it on one fish, should I put him in a seperate tank and treat him or should I treat the whole tank?
velvet is one of the most dangerouse parasite to treat.
it can, and often does, wipe out an entire tank.
the best treatment is a copper based medication (note; will kill any snails, shrimp etc). I have had sucess with waterlife cuprazin, which is a copper based med aimed at the marine side of fish keeping.
just follow the dosage on the bottle.
the other important thing with treating for velvet is light,
the parasite is stronger in light, so during treatment a total blackout will help speed things along.
I wrap the tank in a heavy blanket or duvet, ensuring there are no chinks for light to get in, obviously turn off the tank lights too.
this should be kept in a dark room as well, so curtains drawn at all times.
no peeking, no feeding. the only time you should access the tank is to add more medication.
the blackout should be for the first 3 days of treatment and the following two days (if using cuprazin) should be unwrapped but with tank lights off.
