I have 4 silver tetras that I think are silver tips. They are a nightmare. They chased my guppys (when they were alive) constantly and made their life hell. I have 2 neon tetras ("the cycle survivors") and they hide all day because of these other tetras.
I thought putting tetras with tetras would be fine, would adding a bigger fish help bring them down a few pegs? Not an agressive addition, just a bigger presence.
Any comments appreciated
I'm not sure about adding bigger fish. I do know though that tetras tend to be nippy and like to be in shoals of 6-8 minimum. If they are not in big enough numbers, their "nippiness" tends to be worse. Perhaps you could try adding another 4 if your tank allows. I'm not sure it'll help, but it might.
Yeah, it might be that they feel threatend only being 4, the white tip tetras are not shoaling as well as the neons did. My lone "warrior" neon is still doing ok, I'm gonna give it a week and give him some company. Safety in numbers and all that.
I added a plec the other day, wait a week or so before adding anything else?
I nearly decided against the plec because of the size they grow, but have already seen the next tank I'm buying and he'll fit in nicely :)
Tetras will not shoal unless they feel threatened or insecured. Silver-tipped tetras are just one of the few tetras that have a habit for nipping. What was the size of your tank? Providing more plants and hiding places for the ones bullied will help.
