hmmm

i have seen that happen several times in my place of employment and it always seems to be a xenia from a not so clean system or a systaem that was breaking down...then we put them into our reef system and after several weeks to a couple months they turned the more atractive white and silver color ....i dont know if this helps but i would not be concerned...it seems buisnes as usual after the color change....

What do u mean by clean system or systaem? Is their any way I can combat this?

clean

sorry that was a mis spelled word...system... a clean system ...as in pristine...no freefloating organics...no nitrates...phosphates...RO water, salt and dose with nothing else...thats what i mean...and this is from experience not from books....i dont know the exact determining factor but as i said i have seen several xenias with a darker red or brown color change in cleaner systems...i bought some xenia that was brownish and elongated from a person that had a xenia crash...i put some in a nano that i grow frags out and keep extremly clean and controled as well as bright lighting...it is now silver white...every batch that my work gets that goes into our reef tank changes to the white or purple color as well..the exact same xenia in a differnt nano tank devoid of skimming and only has CFLs retained its drab brown red ....wish i could give you the magic answer but as you may have read these xenias are strange indeed.....

Do u think it is worth getting soft coral without an ro? Or do u need all that fansie stuff to get coral?

no RO

nah you dont need ro to have salt...it is nice to have...but i personaly dont use RO on any of my tanks except one nano frag grow out tank...wich i simply buy gallons of water for changes...and i have succesfully kept a number of coral species...in particular softs in not so prestine waters...just pay attention to your perameters and you should be fine...go for the gold man...i run some of the most bare bone systems you could see and all of them have coral of some form or another...
