ok this is gunna sound really stupid cause personaly i didnt know it was possible. i bought i lr that was full of sponges and stuff. one looks like a slimy green bugger that someone just spit on the rock lol. well when i placed my rock in the tank i listend to the guy i bought it froms advice as to where to put it and this morning i went to look and the sponge moved itself to a lower part of the rock and left a small part of its body behind. are they suposed to do this kinda thing?
cant do a pic for id sorry =( wish i could theres lots of stuff i cant find matches for online
its not uncommon for a sponge to tear or come undone from excesive flow...dont worry as long as there are no trapped air bubbles in the tissue the piece that dislodged will most likely reatach itself to the rock and the tissue left behind will regrow with a structure that acomodates the amount of flow...sponges are an interesting group of life...
yeah iv seen um tear from flow in my nano tank i had a brown type that was very thin but no longer have it... but this one dosnt look like it tore from the actual flow it literly looks like it just crawled down the rock a bit to a hole just under where it was sitting... iv counted at least 7 diffrent types of sponge on my rock and only 3 have moved a bit and they all look like (for lack of better description) someone spit on the rock.
probuly should open another thread but if ya read this bad is this how they reproduce in the tank? if not how do they?
most sponges that grow that way do so verticly or horizontaly according to flow and light preferance...your sponge is moving and leaving tissue that will most likely become more sponge...true sponges cannot move so thay have to let the flow do the work...many sponges reproduce by sperm and eggs producing larva but in the aquarium most reproduction is done by fragmented pieces...you could easily have a demospongea of some form....they come in several colors most commonly yellow, green, or brown...
here is a green ball sponge i have that travels and reproduces in the mannor that you speak...thesee come in several colors and when exposed to undesirable currents can have that spit look you speak of...
hmmm... ill try and get a pic of it... i just got a new camera and cant seem to get this one to take decent ones threw the tank like my old one
i am not a photographer but i just turn the flash off and the room lights ...i take a pic a little further away than i intend to then crop it...
