There is a search feature that comes in handy when you have a situation like this... It's on the blue bar just under the big "TropicalFishKeeping.com" banner... Follow it to the right, it's the third from the right.
Here's a topic I found for you.
Good luck... :)
thanks but it douse not really explains what's happening to the live rock.
The link above is a great link. That post was by Kellsindell. I haven't seen him here in a while, but he is a knowledgeable member whose advice is worth reading.
The concept of curing live rock applies to rock which has been recently removed from the ocean and transported great distances to your pet shop or wholesaler. A lot of microfauna and other small life forms will die off during shipment, often remaining attached or loosen embedded within the live rock. When placed into an aquarium, this causes organic decay and very large rapid ammonia spikes. The rock actually has a strong odor to it, immediately noticeable when you lift the rock from the water. In short, it stinks!
It is rare to find uncured live rock offered for sale at the LFS any more. Most of the rock is pre cured at the wholesale level and upon arrival at the LFS is ready to purchase. The dry rock I recommend from Marco Rocks is also pre cured.
You may sometimes find rock used on eBay or Craigs List, and depending on the condition of the tank from which it is being acquired, the rock may go through a small curing process. The actual "curing" is the process by which everything dies / decays from the rock that will not be kept living in captivity. Keep in mind, we aren't talking about high life forms here, we are talking microfauna, sponges, algaes, etc.
I can't imagine that this will be a concern for your tank. By the way, when my 180 was set up the rock from Marco Rocks was NOT pre cured. If you click on my 180 build thread linked below, you will see pictures of my live rock curing in a vat.
thanks Pasfur, I am still reading your 180 build now it's really long :) but a good read.
I CAN'T WAIT in-tell I get my clown fish :)
I need to post some new pics. I'll be sure to do that sometime soon. Man, these fish have GROWN.
