I got the go ahead from the boss to get another tank because the GF really likes the Demasoni Cichlids. My LFS has some pretty tiny ones (1/2" or so). In doing some research, looks like they are tops on the aggression scale, even for Malawi Cichlids. I was looking at doing 90g with bala sharks, RTS, gold gouramis, kribs. I'm thinking this won't work. Anyone with experience with demasonis?

Are you asking if you can put demasoni in with bala sharks, gourami, RTS, and kribs? If that's what you're wondering, then most definitely not. Demasoni are suited for mbuna-only tanks, that's really all there is to it. Demasoni are definitely one of the more aggressive mbuna species, and you need to keep an absolute minimum of 10-12 dems in a tank for it to be successful. Anything less than that, and you'll most likely end up with one dominant dem killing everyone else off.

Hmm. I had read a couple of things about people using dither fish such as a school of tiger barbs and they keep the demasoni's entertained so they don't wear the other fish out.

I highly doubt it would work for very long. You really do need at least a group of 10, and they would absolutely slaughter the sharks, RTS, and Kribs. Plus their water requirements are much different...they need very hard water with a very high pH level, and they are a rock fish. Dems are just generally completely incompatable with the fish you have.

Well, last night when I picked up my 90g for the sharks I also got a small tank just for the demasoni. I really don't want to do a large African Cichlid tank and if I do the Demisoni, the tank would likely end up as an African Cichlid. Thanks for you input. :)

Cool. What size is the dem tank?

leifthebunny 05-03-2007 11:17 AM

I only got a 12g. Since it won't be planted, I can at least get a lobster now. :)

SinisterKisses 05-03-2007 01:19 PM

Well, the lobster will be good in there, but its too small for demasoni. They'll need at least a 33gal if you plan to do a dem-only tank.

leifthebunny 05-03-2007 03:37 PM

How many fish is that? I've heard people cramming 12+ in only 100L. I'm only doing 2 + the lobster. Right now they are thumb nail size.

SinisterKisses 05-03-2007 04:17 PM

...if you're only doing 2, you're only going to end up with one  And a 12gal tank is simply too small for any mbuna, even just one.

Oh, and the dems will most likely eat your lobster when it molts, if the lobster doesn't eat them when they're sleeping if they're that small.
