How should a store keep cichlids??
I was at a pet store and they had maybe a 55-60G with about 8-10 various cichlids
and a few other medium size fish (not sure the types though)....Well, the cichlids
were going at it, especially the bright blue one. The other non cichlids and sucker fish
were not being bothered, but it didn't look like a very calm environment for them all.
Should I say something? They also kept like 10 cichlids in a tank about 12 by 12 inches,
and they were nipping each other it looked like...I'm a betta person, but it just struck me
as odd. I know I wouldn't put 10 male bettas in that kind of space!
What kills me is, they had like a whole 50 ft WALL full of empty tanks they could be using!
WTH? The employees are nice but they are amazed when I tell them the correct info
about bettas or fish in general care....they said they are adding salt water fish, but
I can just see those all dying within a few weeks there unless they all start researching more.
Argh...I blame the manager, he's a dufus from what I've seen.
I don't fully agree with the way pet stores stock cichlids. Unfortunately, your description describes almost every pet store I have ever seen (minus the violence, though). I don't know how they keep all those furocious cichlids in such close proximaty.
I used to go to my local pet store quite often (before it shut down), and the same african cichlids were still there, jammed in a tank. Those overstocked tanks must have exeptional filtration and hours of cleaning. I know I can bearly keep my cichlids from killing each other sometimes with half the fish and twice the space!
I guess that is just the magic of the pet store.
Actually, it sounds like they need more cichlids in the tank. My LFS also has some longer 60-ish gallon tanks and they crowd them to disburse aggression, which is a very common practice with Africans. The one with smaller (2-3 inch) Malawi's usually has at least 100 fish in it, and the ones with larger (3-5 inch) fish usually have 40-50 fish in them. With so many fish it is almost impossible for them to get into serious fights with or target one another, so they all stay in very good shape. Usually it's hard to even find one with nipped, ragged fins.
If it's really bad you could definitely mention the diffusion of aggression among more fish concept to them. Keeping only that many in an open tank that size is definitely asking for trouble. :-?
That's interesting you can do that w/ Cichlids...I can't imagine 100 male betta together! LoL
I'll ask them the logic behind their set up next time...
Its a store... they put a lot of fish in one tank. You can not complain about temporary stocking measures. The tanks my stay like that, but the fish are constantly moving out of the tank as they are bought. And yes with cichlids you can throw a bunch in one tank. I've kept tanks close to store stocking levels before, but with fish besides cichlids:lol:.
I forgot to add...the tank with the few cichilids (not the stocking tank), said, "For Display Only,
Not For Sale"... :-/
finding a pet store associate that knows anything about fish is like walking into walmart and finding the guy in the hardware section that knows anything about hardware.
i like to ask the ladys at my local petsmart questions about there fish just so i can correct them. i think its halarious. my girlfriend hates it tho.
You know I tried to work for a petstore when I was like 15-16, and they all turned me down
bc of lack of experience! But I think even then, I would have taken better care of the animals
than some older people.
^ Agreed. althogh there are the occational petshop employees that do actualy know something. it is verry rare.
i remember when i got my first ten gallon tank. the girl at the LPS sold me like 10 fish. she knew more than i did but at that time it wasnt verry much. i told the girl what kind of tank i had and she still sent me home with a dragon Goby, 4 red tetras, a tiger oscar, a pleco, and some zebra danios.
crazy right? i went out and droped my whole weeks paycheck on a 20 gal and all the nesasary atatchments to make room. came home with all this crap in the back seet of my car and my girlfriend at the time was checking the mail, oh man she was angry. turns out she flushed the oscar cause he was terorizing all the other fish earlier that day.
point is, all of this could have been avoided if the dumb girl at the LPS had even the slightest amount of knowledge about the fish in her department.
I love it!! I do the same thing!!! And the scary thing is usually its Petsmart that is suppose to have such knowledgable people!
