NO3- is high
I have a 20 gallon tank. Whisper 20 filter, fluorescent light, bubbler, gravel, about 14 fish mix of sharks, tetras and live bearers.
I just purchased a test kit... I know, I should have gotten this earlier... but everything seemed good except the Nitrate.
Should I be concerned? How could I lower the level?
I just did a water change (4.5 gallons) this afternoon, PRIOR to the testing.
Your water parameters are okay.:) Unless nitrates exceeded beyond 40 ppm, there's nothing to worry about.:)
As for 20g, what kind of sharks? Some sharks get very big, too big for a 20g. Others tend to be fairly aggressive.
I have a red-tailed shark and a bala shark. I read recently that the bala could get to be 18 inches!! He's only about 2.5 right now. I have already decided when he gets bigger to sell him back to my lfs. They take trades for store credit. Didn't know he would get big when I bought him... I think the red-tail is a nipper but I can't really tell. It mostly stays under the filter in shelter then chases the blind cave tetra. Poor thing. It can't see!!
Thanks for the nitrate advice. It seems like my tank is doing pretty well there. :)
Your Red-tailed shark is definitely fin nipping. I believe it's recommended they stay in a species-only tank, actually.
And yeah your Bala will quickly outgrow your 20 gallon.
