cichlids and plants

hey guys im new to the forum- i need help with my african cichlid tank im setting up...what type of live plants can i add with the cichlids? Ive heard so many negative comments :-( , since they are very territorial they will destroy all plants in the tank. Some say i can add plants just that they have to be hardy plants....which ones????

I have maintained rift lake cichlids with plants, depends upon the species perhaps. Given the hard basic water, Vallisneria is a perfect plant for these tanks. Java Fern and Anubias attached to some of the rocks would probably be fine.
