Do I need a filter?

Hi - again

I am a little confused. My brother has a salt aquarium and has suggested that I get a external filter (ie fluval 205) for my saltwater tank. I was ready to buy this when I read on here that if you are having a reef tank then don't get an external?

Can someone please clarify whether I need one - or even better tell me exactly what I need.
Thanks

Every system, every want, every goal is different. Nobody can tell you just what will or won't work for you. You must read as much material as possible, decide what you'd like from your tank and then make educated decisions based upon what YOUR needs are. You just say reef but don't specifically outline and particular wants. SPS coral are completely different than soft corals, LPS have different needs than fish. Some people think a tank full of rock and fish is a reef. Some think only tanks full of SPS make a reef.

ok what you need for a reef is a biowheel or canister no sumps because they become nitrate factories

You have it backwards.

Bio-wheels are the nitrate factorys are do terrible in a marien system. Sumps are the best filtration you can have; it adds water to the system, you can have a refugium, and you can put equipment in there. Bioballs are also bad.

Canister filters can potentially be bad, but I am no expert on those.

Again, Aquakid, please ensure the information is correct before posting it. Also, please note that this thread has been dead for nearly a year and a half.
