Very aggressive male variatus
My male variatus was fine until I bought a second variatus. The new variatus is a female. It's been a week, and every time the female comes out of the plants for food, the male chases and bashes into it causing the female a lot of stress.
I assure you it isn't mating; it's quite aggressive and knocks the female around a bit. I don't want this purchase to go to waste! Variatus are hard to find here and it costs an arm and a leg to have them shipped in.
What can I do? The male has paired up with a blue wagtail platy (meaning I know what he's like when he's mating). The female is instantly attacked when spotted. The only other tank I have right now is a hospital tank which is currently being used to treat 2 fish with ich.
sounds like you need a few more females to keep the male from picking on the single female you have. if that's not possible i'd rehome the female. will your lfs take the fish off of your hands?
I didn't catch that in your first post. Just assumed that you had the one female of that type. I'd give the poor thing to a friend in that case. Good luck.
I only have 2 variatus; one is a male and one is a new female.
The rest are the "regular" maculatus. The male variatus is paired with a female maculatus, but for some reason has this issue with the new variatus.
I probably will end up giving it away.
