First off, Welcome to the Forum. This is a fun place to share stories, advice and learn from others. Glad you found it. It was a very valuable resource for me while setting up my tanks as well.

Second, you don't have to wait to add plants. In fact, if you add enough plants, you don't have to wait to add a few hardy fish. Adding enough plants will sort of suck up all the Ammonia and Nitrite in your tank so a few (2-3) hardy fish to start out will be fine. In a 12 gallon, it isn't a lot of room so I will let others advise on which fish to start with. What were you thinking?

Hi and welcome to Tropical Fish Keeping forum.

If the light fixture is incandescent (screw-in bulbs) the best choice would be "daylight" type compact fluorescent with a kelvin rating around 6500K. If there are two bulbs, two 10w CF will be adequate; if only one, then a higher wattage CF.

On the fish, you could have a "livelier" display with very small fish; there are "dwarf" type species in the cyprinids and under the characins the Ember Tetra. Depending upon your water parameters, several choices; as these are shoaling fish, they need a group but being small that is easily achieved with small fish. The profiles (second tab from the left in the blue bar across the top of the screen) include info on parameters, numbers, size, etc.
