JD and Salvini doing premating rituals
My Jack Dempsey and Salvini Cichlid which are from similar areas but completely different cichlids are doing things cichlids do before they mate. They swim in circles next to each other and when the pass, the rub up against each other. The Salvini comes up behind him and swims really close to the JD flaring his fins. They have different colors and a different shaped face. I am almost positive the Salvini is a male and the JD is a female. The Salvini is a little bit smaller.
Do you think this is even possible?

They could just be establishing dominance. Do you have pics of the fish so we can sex them?

If they show tail slapping and lip locking then they very well could spawn. Im pretty sure their both found in mexico and they are both CA cichlids so yeah it can happen. Please do not distribute the fry. We have enough problems with hybrid fish.

the JD has dug a large pit were he hangs out. I will post some pics tomorrow. I did see them lip locking once, but they aren't aggressive toward each other. Its a 55 gallon planted btw.
