Well you are right, it is a goldfish. Im no goldfish expert but could it be a butterfly tail? The body looks like that of a comet or common goldfish but the tail looks a bit like a fantail or something. Are there goldfish hybrids? Feel free to correct me if Im wrong. A fact about goldfish is that they are prone to over-eating and they don't know when to stop. They can die from this so its best to feed it sparingly. Honestly, I havent kept a golfish before, or I may have a long time ago and forgotten. I know, they are like everyone's first fish but not for me LOL. I cant really help you with how much to feed the fish. I would just keep researching and googling golfish care. They have quite a heavy bioload if I remember correctly, in other words, they poop a lot. I would probably change 25% of the water twice a week until I get an expert's opinion. How big is the tank that you are keeping it in? Sorry Im not much of a help and good luck with the new fish :D

I think its a Calico Fantail, im not sure about the fantail part though...

I think I might be a little concerned about those incredibly red gill plates.

It is a fancy tail goldfish. They are very messy and should not be kept with other tropical fish because the prefer colder temps than tropical fish. They also get to be 8 inches long and need at least a 30 gallon tank. And like was mentioned above they will eat and eat and eat so you have to be careful and only feed them once a day and no more than what they can eat within 5 minutes.

It is just a Goldfish but there are all sorts of names for the fancy tailed versions. I would just call him a fan tail.

Treat him just like any other goldfish but make sure there are no fast currents in the tank as they can struggle because they're not fast swimmers due to the double tail, it's basically a deformity which has been bred into them.

Make sure the water quality is good because it doesn't look in the best of health. Feed very small amounts, only a small pinch twice a day and remove any food that's uneaten after two minutes. Goldfish can get big but they're slow growing and can live for years...up to 30 years isn't unknown! Don't worry about tank size for the moment, just get the water quality right.

Do you have a filter?

Is the tank 'cycled'? (don't worry if you don't know what that means, I'll explain if you like).

Are you doing water changes?

Are you using a de-chlorinator for the water changes? You need to treat tap water before adding it to his water.
