Hey again folks, I'm pretty certain the answer to this query will be "just put up with it" but i was wondering if anyone had any cunning ideas i've not heard of... I have a tank that's been running about 4-5 months now, and I've got a rather nice bit of bogwood in it, and despite soaking it for a month prior to putting it in the tank it's still leaching tannins. I know it's not gonna harm the fish, and i do weekly water changes as well as putting some carbon in the filter from time to time, but it's still rather brown looking. I don't mind a little yellow tint cos it looks riverish, but sometimes it looks like my fish are swimming in wee (unless my housemate has something to confess too...) Any thoughts?
Is it small enough to boil it? This will get rid of the tannins faster. Or soak it in super hot water and change it daily. Don't forget the water conditioner.
I managed to get it to fit in a wok when i first got it and boiled it for a couple of hours with regular water changes. it's quite dark in stripes, so i suspect it's just one of those bits.
Boiling does remove some of the tannins but the wood will continue to leech tannins over the years. This has been evident with my own driftwoods. Despite boiling them several times, they continue leaking tannins. Note that my woods are in my tanks for almost 6-7 years.
I boiled mine for literally an entire day and it still leached so much the water looked like a lake. I got rid of it, and ended up with bacterial bloom. My other tank? The same batch, the same boiling, no tannins. It's a smaller piece though.
So you are correct. Put up with it, or get rid of it! :)
i left some out in the elements(on the shed roof over winter)its now grey
