RE: clean an empty tank
hey I just got a 6 month old rio 180 and it is in pretty great condition only prob is it has been left and the algae has really built up on the tank inside.
I visited a pet store and they said that washing up liquid would work, as long as I didnt fill the tank for about a week after and aired it properly. Is this right.
Your suggestions would be great I really want to get it looking sparkly new again (and not stinkin of fish like now), but I dont wanna kill everything i keep in their. btw I will be leaving the tank empty for the next 3 months while I move apartments. so anything I clean it with will have 3 months to be aired.
Did they mean soap?
Although you can rinse soap out...it's hard and I wouldn't chance it...
...soak it with hot water and vinegar...scrape the algae off...let it dry while you're gone...
I agree with Rue. Vinegar and hot water, give it a good scrubbing with an algae remover pad- do NOT use anything not labeled specifically for aquarium use though (no soap pads, steel wool, sponges, etc), they can contain chemicals harmful to fish. Rinse the tank really good. Repeat the whole process until it looks sparkling. After it dries out, fill with clean water and check for leaks. If it is then clean and leak free, let air dry and go for it!
thanks guys this helps lot Ill have a go with vinegar. its not too bad just a bit of growth around the base I wanna get rid of but this will be a great help.
