mollies and platies
Can they breed?
If you are talking about crossing mollies and platies, no is the answer. Both may be livebearers but they are far different from each other. Platies will however cross with the swordtails whereas...I can only say this from claims as I never saw the resulted strain...mollies can cross with guppies.
In general, livebearers are very prolific and will often pose a threat if their population cannot be controlled. By all means, this fish can cause a strain to the bioload with their continuous reproduction.
Phew. And thanks!
I just added two mollies and they have been attempting to mate with the platies. I am glad they won't be successful - as you say- I really don't want the tank over run.
What sexes are both?:) Recommended sex ratio is 2-3 females per male. Male livebearers are quite persistent in their efforts to court the females (regardless of their species) which in turn will become quite vulnerable to illnesses if stressed from constant prodding by the males. The recommended sex ratio still needs to be observed whether the livebearers are different species or not.
Two males to 4 females. Hopefully that will be enough- but if not I will get another female or two. So far it seems that only one male is interested, but then they are new, so I suppose that can change.
