Red Minor Tetra are too territorial
My new tank (its several months old, just now adding fish though) is being terrorized by my long finned red minor tetra. I got four thinking they'd be ok because their tankmates are neon tetra which are considerably smaller and so the red minors wouldn't feel threatened. Well they instantly spread out and claimed a tiny territory in the tank and corral the neon's into the corner. They're nipping at the neon's fins pretty badly. I've given it 2 days to see if the red's would school and it doesn't look promising. I'm thinking of returning them to the store where I bought them for fear they'll nip all the neon's fins off.

I was told that would be a possibility with having a smaller number of them. At most I could add 2 more for a total of 6. Would they calm down and school? Or would they just fight more over territory?

I think its a moot point and I should remove the red minors and get 2 or 3 more neons.

the group together when they are stressed or frightened.if they are fanning out means they are comfortable.better return them or the neon are gonna get bullied to death

I was afraid of that, its that or I keep the red minors and have a semi-aggressive tank haha decisions, decisions.

Common names are misleading, but chances are the "red minor" is the Serpae Tetra, Hyphessobrycon eques. As noted in our profile, this fish is a norotious fin nipper and can be very aggressive, killing other equal to smaller-sized fish through stress if not physical attacks. A group of no less than 8 may calm their nipping, but not always; and they need a largish tank, 2-3 feet for just the Serpae on their own, larger if other fish are to be included. Please read the profile for the info and reasons. I would remove (return) the red minor or you will have continual problems and sick or dying fish.

Problem solved, red minors returned and I got 2 more neons in their place for a total of 8, a good sized school now.
