Cichlid Hardness Heaven! -What do you find works?

So, I am looking to create the ultimate 72G Malawian cichlid tank and I am debating about my substrate. Originally I planned on using just a natural gravel. Our water in my area is pretty hard but, never the less, I want to buffer a nice hard cichlid friendly situation. I am not a big fan of chemical additives and would like to avoid those.

I have heard of using crushed coral but I am not sure how to implement it (I have a completely canister based filter system along with a Phosban Reactor, and a small protein skimmer hanging on the back).

Another option is this product called Eco-Complete African Cichlid Substrate, see here:

What do you all think? I am going for pH stability and the optimal enviorment.

Todd:

You may think that I have "lost it" after reviewing this post but I am speaking from experience.

I have PhUp, PhDown and some type of mineral additive (for my RO water) but have never used any of these.

The wood in my tank still releases tannins when I "have the air diffusers going".
I have two "holy rocks" (limestone) in my sump to neutralize the acid, buffer the Ph and provide trace minerals.
My angels have grown from nickel and dime size to 3" to 5" size and only one has died (the day after I received him).

Please note though that I am not familiar with the water parameters necessary for keeping Lake Malawi cichlids.

Hung up before I "got through talking".

These are "holy rocks".
