Resiliant African Cichlids
So got a crazy story of fish survival at its finest, It involves some personal tragedy but definately a post worth reading. So about two weeks ago my house caught fire and was a total loss... We had seven diffrent fire depts there to try and save the house, and 4 trucks spraying water on the house plus about a half dozen ffiremen with hoses spraying the house. now of course the electricity was cut off of the house along with everything else. My fish tank (a 55 gal about a yr old) was located in our basement, which of course thats where all the water flowed from the trucks. We wernt able to go in the house untill about three days after the inital fire. Once we were able to get into the house we tryed to look for anything we could save, There wasnt anything not even shoes or personal documents. But my wife suggested that i go into the basement to see if the fish were still alive which i tryed to explain to her that it has been three days with no heat, filtration or anything at all. But she talked me into going down to check anyways. so we went down to take a look after the 4 ft of water was pumped from the basement from the water they used to extinguish the house. I took the flash light held it up to the glass and saw my pleco chillin on the side of the glass and that was about it. so i went ahead and found my siphon and drained the tank half way or so and then started to take out all the rocks. Yes all 200lbs of them. While doin this i found EVERY FISH to be alive and Healthy in water that was making my hand numb from being in it for several miniutes. So we got more bags and got up all the adult fish. so as i started to sipohon out the rest of the water my wife was holding the flash light and spoted about 7-8 fry! all alive and kickin. so we got all of them out aswell, and continued to break down the aquarium for transport.
So after we got everything all broken down my grandma offerd to house the aquarium and wach after the fish untill our house is rebuilt. with the tank being at her house im only able to visit about once every two weeks, which means they only get a w/c every two weeks and and more than likely being overfed. and as we all know cycleing a tank sometimes you have to w/c every day or so untill the cycle starts its thing. well the last time i visited my grandmas the ammonia was a little above 1.0 very dark green on the API scale. And all the fish were still happy as can be and disease free even the fry! now fast forward to today and my grandma called and said the ammonia was yellow which means the cycle has completed and all the fish are still alive!
The moral of the story? African Cichlids can survive ANYTHING and to all that know me from here please keep me and my family in your prayers.
Oh my goodness, thankfully you are all ok.
fantastic news on the fish.
i will pray for you all.and god bless grandma too.
Oh man Mitch I am so sorry to hear about your house. But it is awsome that your fish survived and your grandma seems to be doing a good job takeing care of them for you. I would of been like you and thought for sure they would of been dead at least you had one good thing. Did you have insurance? I will keep you and your family in my prayers. And let us know if we can do anything.
Wow resistant little buggers! Sorry to hear about your house and your belongings, but at least there was one little ray of light to come out of this dark moment in your life.
