The Jellyfish Experiment Day 1
I live in Hawaii and as you know we have lots of beautiful fish everywhere
I have had sucsesseful salt water tanks for about 10 years. I love to collect my own fish, but even more I like the wierd stuff. slugs, tubeworms, anenomes
,shrimp, sponges, and now have become fascinated with Jellyfish.
My first Jellyfish tank was a 3 gallon bowl where I raised 2 half moon jellyfish
Peanutbutter and Jelly :)
I then while diving one day came across Cassiopeia Andromeda or know by
its common name The Upsidedown Jellyfish. I found the colors to be striking
and they make a nice addition to a carefully balanced aquarium.
I became aware that a lagoon was being drained for future development.
I had to act fast and try to save all the Jellies I could. When I got there the scene was horrible 1000s of Jellies dying just left to dry in the sun, blues reds golds purple I took about 25 and moved them to a new lagon and then took about 20 for my self .
I am building a 1000 gallon outdoor reef aquarium but its not finished yet
so I went and puchased a 300 gallon wading pool as temp residence for them. I will upload pictures and report how it goes.
Day 1 filled pool with sand from lagon and added 150 gallons freash sea water also added 20 Jellyfish .
That's nice of you to rescue the jellies. Its sad to hear about the rest, but you would of needed a semi-truck for all them. I wish the construction workers would of at least moved them.
If you could keep me updated that would be great! I am trying to build a 1500 gallon salt tank and want some jellies. But I couldn't forgive myself if I killed a whole bunch when all I needed to do was ask someone else.
Just an FYI the Jellies have been doing nicely since 04/18/07
I am changing out 20 gallons of water a week so they have a fresh supply of plankton so far so good will be adding air stone and a skimmer.
I am using the natural sand from where they were found I have noticed it is changing darker . will do some research on this.
My aquarium sand got darker too.
Another fellow hawaiian fish lover. That sucks about the jellies. I wish i new about that i would have scooped some up and started a whole new tankf or them. I have just started my second 55G, but the one you are building sounds great. How are you going to keep it cool if it sgoing to be outdoors. You putting a big chiller on it or something. Wont it get to hot for your fish to live?
Are you on Oahu, if so you must get your water from the aquarium right?
Hey fellow hawaiian there might be some jellies left the supervisor is real kewl he will loan you a vest and hard hat and let you collect.
his name is Shane.
To bad about the sea horses
here is some pictures of the survivors
Oh yeah I hope that the movment of the water being pumped through the water falls will be enough to keep the water cool if not chillers it will be
P.S P.S Im a waikiki aquarium member..
where is this development at?
