New NanoCube 24!!
Ok so i got finally decided to invest into a saltwater tank. The best i could get with my money (still some left for whatever else i need) was a JBJ Nano Cube 24. The aquarium is in my room just sitting. I have read and read and am ready to buy something. But i have no idea as to what it should be. Should i start running some alt water through it or wait and add salt water, live rock, and sand at the same time. i need a step by step. (planning on a reef)
RO water...mix with slat for a day...add LR and sand....wait for cycle.....you will also need Calcium, Alkalinity, Nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, and pH test kits to name the basics....API is the middle ground there. Do you have proper lighting?
Check out the articles in the forum for SW for basics.
Then the fish profiles for fish you like and fit what you have.
Then ask us with any questions
i am confused (sorta), i own an RO unit but no DI. Should I invest in an add on DI or is RO just fine? And any i deas on best salt mix? andd haha (sorry for all the questions) where is a good place to but Live Rock?
RO is perfectly fine! DI is optional.
I use instant ocean. It has all the right levels for a reef tank.
A LFS is the best place to buy LR(not petco or petsmart a real LFS) If the place looks clean has healthy live stock and cured live rock then buy there.
Questions are great we love answering them. Ask as many as you want because the more you know the better off you are IMO.
i agree with a LFS but if you can get some base rock from places like Marco rocks (very popular around here) then seed it with LR from a local source you will save big money and it will help keep you slow.. trust me as a great man here once said "the only things that happen fast in a tank are bad things" and trust me they were and continue to be very correct on that !!!!!!!!!!!!
i too use instant ocean and the only regret i have is not starteing with their reef crystals... if you use this salt you will have to dose much less...
as for the start up go ahead and set some salty water mixing in there and start to add things like sand and lr as you get them... just dont jump to live stock until everything matures.... it takes time but is well worth the wait
ok so i've decided to make it a shallow sand bed (use as much space as possible) and go with about 40 lbs of live rock (depending on density) and use instant ocean reef crystals with RO water. sound good? i will let you know further and take some pictures of set up
sounds great so far......
What kind of powerheads are best and how much should i get ive read i should probably have a 15X turnover for a reef.
that really depends on what stock you intend to keep... first i would do all or at least some of the mods to the cube.. get rid of the stock pump and replace it with a Maxi Jet 800.. then for others in such a clean looking tank i would get the ones that are real compact (i think they are called wave makers) i am not to familure with brand names.... if i find a good link i will post it here....
well i got the live rock (25 lbs of fiji) from my LFS (rift to reef, great place) and carib-sea sand, and Instant Ocean salt mix, andd an aqueon 500. (keeping stock everything for time being) filled halfway with water and heater set on 79 (good temp?) and just a circulation pump i found in a fountain going.
