Would kuhli loaches be alright in this tank?
Alright, so Im going to setup a tank for a project. I would like to put some kuhli loaches in this tank. This is a 3ft 50 litre (13 gallons) with a sand substrate approximately 2 1/2 inches deep. It will be planted fairly densly with rice plants. There will be 5 female fighters in this tank. It will be heated. It is 9 inches from the water's surface to the top of the tank which will be covered by the provided cover glass. They cant escape that can they ?! O_O The water is 6 inches deep. There is no form of cover like driftwood, caves or ornaments, only the plants. They will have plenty of soil to dig in. The reason why i am getting them is because i would like them to dig around and stop any of that anaerobic action happening in the soil and they are pretty interesting fish. If they will survive fine in this tank, what would be the best way to feed them. How many fish should i put in a tank this size? I know its a minumum of 5. Thanks for any advice.

Kuhlis would not be a good choice IME - They do not burrow that deep. Also, I don't think that that is an appropriate sized tank for them. They can be very active.

I would get MTS to dig up your sand.

yea i dont think my lfs stock MTS. what does MTS stand for anyway? i know its a snail. How big would a tank have to be for kuhli loaches then?

What in the world do you mean minimum of 5?

5 Loaches? Oh. lol. If you want 5 coolies in a 13 gallon tank, you'd have no room for the Bettas. MTS are Malaysian trumpet snails, often called a 'pest'.

Very peculiar, many of the ornamental snails are horrible in planted tanks... Apple, mystery, all are pretty likely to devour your plants. Nerites are ornamental, don't breed in freshwater, and are great though.

The pest snails that people hate, (ramshorns, pond, and MTS) are actually the best cleanup crew you can have. I would email a company that specialises in plants (Aquarium Plants Pond Plants From Sweet Aquatics) and if you order some plants they'll include some snails for free.

Pet stores will usually treat their aquariums and kill the pest snails. You can also try ebay or aquabid.

If the Kuhlis had a cave I would say go for it. :)
