Glass Catfish - bottom dweller or not?
I'm currently getting ideas on what I want to do for my new tank (pending paycheck and apartment approval, haha). I'm interested in glass catfish because, in my opinion, they seem pretty cool. Stuff I have read about them mentions all the housing issues (groups, etc) and things of that nature...but not what level of the tank they inhabit. They don't *look* like bottom dwellers, but I just wanted to check and see if anyone had any information on that...
they are a lovely looking and active fish :)
You are right that they do not dwell at the bottom. They are generally found near the middle or top but very rarely the bottom.
They are fast but if kept in smaller numbers can be shy, you need to really make sure they are not bullied away from the food by other fish.
If you get a decent amount of them the loose the shyness and really come out of their shells :)
Awesome, that is exactly what I was hoping to hear.
I have 5... started... with 2, before I knew better, the 2 would hide in plants towards the back ...since I got the rest they stay front center mid upper in the tank shoaling I think,,,,,The one thing I have noticed is they seem a little dim when it comes to being fed they want the food to fall directley in front of their little faces ....Im always saying TURN around, look around!!!!!...I dont find them active, just stay put most of the time, maybe I need more
You will find the answer/reason for all your questions (where it swims, how it eats and why, etc) in the profile of this fish. Profiles are under the second tab from the left in the blue bar at the top, or you can click on the shaded name in posts to see that fish's profile info. Glass Catfish for example.
We love our Glass Cats. I agree that they prefer the middle to top, mostly middle in my experience, unless they're feeding. We have some that position themselves at the top, in between the filters when feeding on floating food. The food comes straight at them and they dart out to catch it. My son used to liken it to a video game. Others stay in the middle and let the food come to them. They love frozen foods of all sorts.
Other than that, lots of company, current, plants, and water changes will make them very happy.
