pond filter for large fish tank
i went to lowes yesterday and saw they had a biological pond filter for ponds with fish. it looks very much like a canister filter and also uses a mesh like disk you fill with carbon in between the sponges. now in order to use this filter on the tank i plan to build (300+ gallons) i would need to use a pump that i can burry in the substrate whitch i think is awsome. the pump and filter are 1500 gph whitch should keep my tank prity well filterd (i plan to do discus) and to break the flow from the return i plan to build a shelf into the tank with rock almost like a waterfall type affect whitch should also keep from makeing to much of a curent whitch iv read the fish dont like. .... so what do you guys think? is this actually doable? anyone have any exp with useing a pond filter to filrter their tank?
btw the filter only cost like 125$ if i went to my lfs and got something with the same gph it would cost me 400$ and the pump is like 50$ and i can also add a uv steralizer for another 100$.

i have never used one in a single tank setup..but i must say yhat for sump purposes ...they work great...it sounds good ..just make sure your pump isnt to strong ..if it is you may difuse it with a spray bar....to an extent...

do you mean the intake part of the pump or the return?

put a spray bar across the top of the aquarium to difuse the water and increase aeration ...if there is still to much flow lengthen the bar...you cant really decrease intake in a single system without straining the pump and ending its life shortly...

ill have to look into that thankes for the advice =). we have a small pond in our yard (no fish in it) it was here when we bought the house and i was looking at how it was set up and on the return there is a box that fills up and over flows in a cut out area and that is directed over the rocks. i could easily build something like that for the top of my tank and direct it with pvc over the shelf and whatever i put in the shelf. i was thinking some plants we have these nice tall plants that grow in the rock along side the pond and have these big purple flowers on them i think it would look nice.
