Do all plecos eat algae? I had the idea they all did, but a girl at a LFT told me otherwise, only bristlenose did, is that right?
That is def. not right. It's amazing how uninformed some fish store employees can be. Geesh.
Just a few examples of algae eaters to start with are common plecos, otos, chinese algae eaters. Check out the fish profiles at the top of the page - second from left.
All plecos will eat algae but alot of them stop losing a taste for it as they get older and become more omnivorous, eating anything at all. Bristlenoses have a tendency to like eating algae their entire lives.
most of the panaques require some wood in there diet...all have a taste for greenery...some more than the next...
Some plecos are indeed better at eating algae than others ,and the Bristlenose is one that remains small and does not lose it's interest in algae while many others simply stop eating it when they come to relaize that the fish foods being offered are much easier to get than all of the work of cleaning glass, substrates,or ornaments.
Some Plecos grow quite large and others remain small, some Plecos are herbivores, some omnivores, and some are carnivores.
Research the fish that interests you and see what enviornment along with foods are required.
Do also keep in mind that many of the Plecos create much more waste than any benefit they may provide with respect to cleaning algae and as such,,they place a significant load on the filter in all but the most heavily filtered tanks.
Would stay clear of Chinese Algae eaters and would not accept one if it were given to me. They are reportedly not from China ,and are very poor algae eaters except when very small. They much prefer to eat fish foods and as they mature,,they become increasingly more aggressive with those other fishes in the tank.
Maybe that's what the store employee meant to say in the first place - that the bristlenose will continue to eat algae when some others may stop.
That would be more informative if you're trying to sell anything other than a bristlenose :)
Excellent info, thanks guys. thank god for the internet! :)
HAHA.. exactly! I got me a young bristlenose for my 55 gal tank and 6 young otto cats for my 56 gal tank, hope they do well.
