Argonite sand bad advice?
So I bought some sand from a petco and the brains at petco told me "Do not wash it, just dump it in" so i did just that and i now have a solid white tank.
After 48 hours I performed 4 70% water changes and the tank is clear enough to see through to the back of the tank but it still looks milky and green spots are forming in the sand (*Sign of cycle?*)
Ill wait a few more days before i put my loaches in there BUT will the tank go milky every time a fish digs around in it? - because i did not wash it? Should i drain the water and start over?
Also I was reviewing was to wash the sand for my 2nd tank and i read that an easy way is to use a pillow case and place a tiny amount a sand in it and run water through it til clear, That sounds riddiculously easy! But does it work?
Thanks for reading!
Correct me if Im wrong, but I thought argonite sand was for reef aquariums? Seeing as how you posted in the freshwater section, I dont think the sand is ok for freshwater, it has trace minerals for saltwater tanks which is not suitable for freshwater fish.
edit: further research: http://www.petco.com/Shop/SearchResu...=argonite+sand
Both of these sold at petco are for reefs, they should not be used for freshwater tanks, esp with sensitive fish like loaches. You need something like playsand that wont add stuff to your water.
I researched it and
your right! I cant effectively use argo for fw - somepeople had success with chiclids but thats about it
And even then they had to let their tank cycle for nearly months to kill off everything thats alive in it
Ugh... now i gotta get all the sand out AND all the water and start over. now im starting to hate sand...
I hear play sand is an amazing choice for fishtanks, its only around 3-4 bucks for 40 lbs of it... Just rinse and place.
Thats what im going with - removing the sand + 50 gallons of water was a difficult task and i hope i never have to do it again
Im about to head up to Home Depot to get some Sakrete 50 Lb Sakrete Play Sand - 40100301 at The Home Depot sakrete play sand
Ill use the pillow case rinse method seems easier
