Ammonia stops at 0,25 mg/L (Fishless cycle)
I've been trying the fishless cycle, and after seeding it the Ammonia drops from about 2mg/L to 0,25mg/l in under 24 hours. Underneath you will find my cycle log so far.
My question is this:
I'm using Sera liquid tests for nitrites and ammonia, and the colour chart goes from
0,0(yellow) - 0,5 (light green) - 1,0 (green) - 5,0 (dark green) - 10,0 (blueish green) Ammonia
0,0(yellow) - 0,5 (light orange) - 1,0 (orange) - 5,0 (red) - 10,0 (darkred - bordo)
My resaults for both are between yellow and green or yellowish orange. So it's definatelly under 1,0 mg/L but has a hint of colour in it. DOes that mean it's cycled or not?:-?
I do know 1 day is not soon enough to add fish, I'm asking in case it stays in traces repetedly.
You will need LR and Live sand for a fishless cycle to occur. I don't know about ammonia drops but I am guessing it probably isn't the way to go if you are making a reef. If it is a FOWLR then meet the criteria you need LR and live sand.I am not experienced but just wait for soeone with it and you will be helped better. Also need to know, Tank size, Filtration type, salt type, additives.

Would reduce the number of drops of NH4 by one half, and see if readings for ammonia and nitrites aren't zero after twelve hours. If so,,and this can be repeated for four consecutive days,, then in my view the tank could support fish so long as they are added two or three at a time with week to ten days before new additions of two or three more fish.
I believe the seed material from pond filter has helped a good deal.
If after reducing the drops of NH4 (ammonia) by one half..you still get readings above zero for ammonia and nitrites,,I would continue with half doses of ammonia until the results read zero for four consecutive days.
Ammendment to previous post, I meant to say NH3 which is ammonia rather than NH4 which is ammonium.

Today I tested the ammonia again and once more the test was a very fade green but far from the 0,5 mg/L color chart.
So, I tried something. I boiled some tap water to eliminate the ammonia in it, which should work, tested that water after it cooled and found it also turns pale green!
That would mean my reading for ammonia after 24 hours for the last 5 days was actually 0mg/. Agree?
Nitrites at 0mg/l for the last two days (no doubt in color there) and nitrates steadily rising.
Can I call this tank cycled?
I will add the usual amount of ammonia tonight and test in 12 hours, and if the reading are the same I'll do the 80-90% water change and add some fish.
One more question, if my filter uses ~2mg/L ammonia in 24 hours, how many Harlequin rasboras OR panda corys AND Siamese algae eaters/otos (depends which i find or suit better) would that mean?

I would think the tank has Cycled but would hold off on the Panda cory's or Otocinclus until the tank was a few months (at least 3) old. Those two species seem to do much better in established tanks as opposed to newer tanks in my expieriences with them.
Not sure what size tank you have but you may have mentioned it and I have forgotten.
If tank is at least 30 gallons,then I would introduce six to eight of the smaller rasboras and let them settle for a week to ten days.
Weekly water changes from here on out of 40 to 50 percent would be my aim.
When you go to purchase the fish look closely at them. Don't purchase any fish from tanks where dead fish are found or the fishes are all sluggish and not actively swimming about. don't purchase fish with obvious bumps,lumps,scrapes ,or fish that have torn fins or look as though they have been sprinkled with salt. Acclimate the fish by slowly adding a bit of your aquarium water to the bag over a period of 30 to 40 minutes. Then net the fish from the bag over a bucket (not the sink) and release them into your tank while lights are off (less stress). Dump the bag of water that the fish came in down the drain.
You may already know much of this but Just a heads up for others who may also read this at some later date.
P.S. Would strongly urge the use of dechlorinator/conditioner PRIME for all new water before new water goes in the aquarium. Good luck!
