I have 2 guppies 1x Tequila Sunrise Delta Guppy, 1x Turquoise Guppy and they are in the same tank as a Cremecicle Lyretail Molly. The tank is a 10 gallon tank so they have plenty of room to move around and the tank is planted. For some reason they will not leave the Molly alone, they chase him around and nip at his face and sides. They never hurt him, but they are constantly at him and chase him around the tank even though he is bigger than they are. I think they are all males, but does that make any difference. Why are they constantly at him? Are guppies territorial? Should I return them back to Petsmart? Any help would be appriciated.
if you have the room, buy 4 female guppies then the males will leave your molly alone :):):)
Yeah thats true! Put a female in a room full of guys and they will pine for her attention.
Thats exactly how I got into the great guppy explosion of 2009...I am thinking your molly is female ...if you get females your going to eventually deal with babies ....another tank...and so on ...maybe return molly?
I would rather keep the Molly as it is the more docile one. The guppies are the ones that act like they have a hyper active disorder. Do guppies usually act like this? I am new to owning fish and just want to have peace in my tank. Thank you for the advice.
Males of both species are hyper when.. they're "in the mood." and there aren't many females...
I would just set up a tank with all males or all females.
Some guppies are more....well hyperactive than others. When it's breeding time, even there are only males in the tank they will try to breed with them thinking they're a female. Also since you added the guppies later they may also be trying to establish dominance. I would put the guppies in a seperate tank from the molly. You can buy a 5 gallon tank for 2 guppies. Just put some decoration in there so there is a little privacy for them.
If you decide to put female guppies in there....be prepared for LOTS of babies. Good luck!
Considering what the issue is (sexually frustrated male Guppies) you got to especially love this picture. Your poor Molly looks like this >
Maybe if you want a peaceful tank you could just return the 2 males for 2 females. The females are not as colorful but are still very pretty fish.
I really don't want a guppy takeover in my tank if I add females. I might just return them back to Petsmart and add something a little more compatible with whats already in the tank.
I agree. That pic says it all.
