Few questions on Angelfish
Hello! I have another post on here about yellow labs as I eventually want both them and angel fish but will start off one at a time but I can't decide which I should get first!
So really to be honest my heart has always fallen to angelfish for a very long time I have dreamt having them and have been I guess, a goal to aspire to.
There is a change coming to Australia which would obliterate small imports on cichlids gourami's and livebearers (including show and wild betta's) so it basically means I need to get in sooner rather than later and buy some cichlids before the only place I can get them are at those pet megamarts (we have petbarn I think you call it petco) and I really don't want to get fish from there!
I really want to be some day breeding angel fish but thought I would start some time a little down the track.
So I have a few questions and ANY helpful answers are welcomed
1) Now this might sound silly but how hard are angels to keep?just how sensitive are they to water quality?
2) I have a 3ft tank that I don't think I will use I actually have my eye on a 4 ft one that is around 18 inches high I think that might be pushing it I would only have regular scalare no veiltails or altums would that be suitable? Its about 55g how many angels could I have?
3) Considering the tank might be a little short would putting sand down help protect their bottom fins?
4) I have read so much about them I am wondering if there is anything I should know that I might not get from the internet and fish shops
5) Oh! also I know that angelfish are particularly prone to ich tail and finrot and hole in the head are there any other diseases I should pay extra attention to or that in your experience they are prone to?
Sorry for the long post apparently I am incapable of any other type:oops:
First of all, you're funny :)
I also LOVE Angelfish, tho I don't have much experience with them. I also have read tons on the internet and have asked many questions. What I do know is that they are beautiful animals, somewhat easy to mantain. I have 8 juveniles in a tall 56 gallon tank, I know this might be a problem once they reach adulthood and might fight for the right to party.. haha jk.. fight once and if they pair up, we'll see... but for now they are all happy, including me :) I have small gravel bottom and they love it. They do on occation get to the bottom of the tank and rub their fins on the gravel but it doesn't seem to affect or damage their fins.
I do water changes in all my tanks regularly, meaning every week or every other week, about 20-25% specially now they the tanks are somewhat new and want to keep the water clean.
When I got the first 5 angels, 4 of them got ick and I paniced! I was adviced to add aquarium salt and raise the tank temperature to speed up the process and kill the ick and in 4-5 days everybody was doing much better. The salt creates this mucousy (sp) film on their skin which is a sign their immune system is reacting and fighting the ick, it boosts their immune system. They look a little funny at that stage but after that, the ick infected fish are strong and more beautiful than they ever were! I also read that ick survivors will be stronger all their life, kinda like humans whgen they get vaccinated.
GEE.. talk about lengthy emails! haha.. well I hope that helped you some :)
Keep me informed and we'll share stories.
hehe I could imagine angels partying head bopping away to some reef music, anywho I am glad you posted it has given me extra courage to take the plunge except I have decided I will only put them in a four ft maybe six angels? but my house is a little on the frail side very old so I will have to put the tank down stairs unless my flatmate doesnt mind her bedroom ceiling caving in and it raining angelfish... BUT her book case is in the way down stairs so I will have to wait until christmas when she leaves. So everything is on hold BUT then this new restriction thing might be in action and I wont be able to get angel fish at all!! oh dear I will have to make some decisions.
By the way as it is I may have to do a postal order for my angels (I think I want platinums) does anyone know how they fair?
TxFrog I hope your angels are well and will continue to thrive
P.S what sort do you have?
Well, so far so good. I have 2 black marble, 2 golden, 1 silver zebra, 1 black, 2 red blushing pandas and 1 gold marble. Waiting for the koi! :D
Wowzer thats such a nice collection did you have to order them online?
Still wondering how I am going to cycle the tank I have a fish pond going in the back yard might be able to get some particularly hardy goldfish off my mum and cycle with them. I don't want to cycle with fish but as I said the only ammonia around here has detergent in it...
Oh well! I will work something out.
Thanks! I love my Angels. No, I got them all here in town, slowly and patiently. Still waiting for the Koi to arrive to the LFS from the Netherlands.
Angel fish are very aggressive my friend had two in his 35 with gouramis and others and they killed the gouramis and nips on the others and the angels had nothing on them.
