New Sail-fin pleco

Hi everyone!
I've got a sail-fin pleco about 2 weeks ago. He's a baby and only about 5" inches right now and so beautiful. I know they are noctural so I put his food out before I turn the lights out for the night about 30 minutes before hand. I'm about 10 feet away from the tank (on the computer) and I'll catch him swimming out of his cave to eat his zuchinni (or whateve vegetable I put out) with the lights on still. I'm 10 feet away and if I make the slightest movement (still 10 feet away) to go over to my bed/closet he freaks and swims back into his cave.

Is this normal behavior for my pleco? How long does it take for him to adjust to his new tank? I've seen videos of people hand feeding plecos and them coming out more during the day so is there any way to make him less shy? I have platies in my tank and zebra danios and everyone gets along and they don't bother him one bit.

Thanks everyone!

Unfortunately, I don't have any real useful information.

I've got a clown pleco that's about an inch and a half long. He's the same way. Really, I don't even see him eat.

I've got a peppermint and a king leopard as well. They're out all hours of the day and night, and I see them all the time.

hmmmm..... maybe we just ended up with some REALLY shy pleco guys. I'm glad to know that it's just not me cause I thought I did something wrong or had the tank set up wrong for him, but there are plenty of caves/hiding spots for him. Perhaps when they get bigger?

Mine only came out when the tank lights were turned off or if I fed froz. bloodworms and brine shrimp.

I guess he just couldn't resist those treats :)

i am not positive but i work in a pet store and over the past five years of working there and owning 2 that each can have there own personality...but for the most part itss secretive ...just normal plec behavior...what really sucks is when you have a nice royal or gold nugget that wont show itself...ADIOS...

I have a bristlenose that was the same way, after a few months, he has gotten to where he explores all over the whole tank all day too.

In one of the other tanks, there is a rubbernose pleco that I have had for months. He NEVER comes out during the day.

I guess it just kinda depends on the personality of your particular pleco.

Thanks everyone for your replies! I guess in the next few months will determine if he's just gonna be one of those fish I hardly ever see kinda guys. It's a shame because he's so beautiful!
