The good the bad and the ugly on Mondo Grass?
Hi everyone. Do any of you have Mondo grass in your tanks? What do you like or dislike about it? Do you plant a whole grouping of it or just a bunch or two? Does it grow fast or slow? How do you trim it? Does it ever soften up? The stuff her is so stiff it almost feels like silk but has a huge root base so I am guessing it will stay rooted very well. Share your thought on this plant, Please. :-)
I'm not sure that this is true aquatic plant. Have heard that it may do OK for a few weeks, months, but that it will slowly die submerged But I will happily admit that I am wrong if this is not so.
Some of the large chain stores often try to pass off plants that will not thrive submerged.
Mondo grass, or more commonly (in aquaria) Fountain Plant, is actually Ophiopogon japonicus. There is also a dwarf variety, Ophiopogon japonicus var. kyoto that may sometimes be seen under the common name Kyoyo grass.
Hiscock says these two varieties (there are a couple others) are hardy and generally do well in most conditions, though they are not true aquatic plants. These are terrestrial plants often found in gardens, the Mondo Grass of gardners is this genus.
I had this plant many years ago, so far back I cannot remember much about it. Keep an eye on it, if it starts to rot pull it out.
I have had some now for about six weeks. I purchased at Petsmart before I found out that it was not a true aquatic. Despite that, it has done well now for 6 wks and I do think that its very attractive looking. Mine grow sort of tall and then start to loop over. For me the jury is still out on this one.
It is so stiff, it feels more like a silk plant then real. You are right though, it looks nice with the curl in the leaf.
