filtration query

hi i have a 35 gallon tank with an established canister (under stand ) filter that has been running for months now.... i want to improve water quality and have another that i am about to set up.

my question is ,, i have washed the new filter media with my tank water and have had it sitting for about 2 hours. should i wait a day , discard the sitting water then fully set up the filter or just set it up because the other filter is doing a decent job... and there may bnot be harm to my fish...

cheers from here...

If you are ADDING a new filter, you can set it up and run it now with no ill effects on your old filter.

However, if you are REPLACING the old one, set up the new one by taking the bio media out of the old one and putting it inside the new one, shove it in there somehow, along with the new bio media. If using stars or balls for the bio media and you cant get it all into the new filter, place the left over in a section of new pantyhose and place it inside the tank. With either of these methods for replacing, you may or may not see a mini cycle.
