I going to be using live rock to cycle my 55 tank I was wondering should I use just regular sand, also I waiting for my pumps ans wave maker and lighting to arrive from marine reef, I was going to set the tank up and just fill it with water and let it sit. until equipment arrives on wednesday 09/14/10 any ideas I will be filtering the water from the tap but not ro water any imput will be great
you deffinitly want a power head or a powerful air pump in after you have filled it with salt water and rock to promote the cycling process and stop dead spots...as far as substrate if you get sand siffting animals for the tank then there shouldnt be a problem with fine grade crushed coral but in my opinion i like to mix a little larger grade with the fine to slow compaction and anerobic bacteria spots....ADIOS...
thanks for your info, I was thinking the same with crushed coral
i personally wouldnt use the crushed coral.
