South American Cichlids & Sharks

Hey all, I just wanted to see if anyone has had any problems with Bala Sharks and Angelfish. My LFS has two full grown Angelfish and several Balas about 6" in size in the same tank without issue. I know they are the more placid of the sharks. I've started a South American Cichlid tank and am looking at apistos, GBRs and angelfish and was just wondering if anyone had these in with bala sharks. The 6" at my LFS doesn't look like it could swallow even a 1.5" fish, but just wanted to check if anyone had comments.

No balas in a tank where your apistos are concerned. Balas do not stay at 6 inches and will reach 12 inches at most. Apistos do not tolerate overly active tankmates which includes the balas unfortunately. IMO incompatible.

Interesting. The balas at the the LFS are pretty slow moving. I have an angelfish that darts around the tank more than I've seen the LFS's Balas. And I know they get to >12", my LFS had some that hit 14", but finally got rid of them. Do you think Pearl Gouramis might be an issue with the Apistos? My GF really wants a pair of Pearl Gouramis.

I still don't recommend mixing balas with angelfish.

No, they'll be alright.

Thanks Blue. I really like the bala sharks and was even contemplating doing a shark specific tank because they do tend to get a bit larger, and a number of them tend to get aggressive. I'm just trying to figure out where all these tanks are going. :P I'm actually now contemplating putting an 180g+ in the living room for bamboo sharks (SW of course).

You might want to start reading shark threads in SW section.:) There's a lot of debates there about sharks and it is not recommended to keep sharks in private aquaria unfortunately.
