New to the forums, newish to the hobby
I'm a student from Canada and I have just began to start up in this hobby in a more serious way. I have had fish most my life, starting with bettas and pleco's of course until they got to big, but have just set up some serious tanks take a look at my tank tabs if you want to know more. Hope to meet you all soon
welcome aboard ....this is the spot for fish geek info....friendly peoples ...well see ya around....ADIOS>...
welcome to the forum.
Welcome to FF! Your tanks sound great, can you post some photos in those profiles so we can see what they look like?
One warning I would like to issue up front, so you are not caught off guard... if you have male and female guppies together in that 10 gallon tank, be prepared to need more large tanks very soon! Guppies breed very quickly. Each female can produce 30+ fry every 30 days. One spawn is a lot of fish for a 10 gallon tank, and can lead to multiple issues, primarily water quality and illness. Guppy fry are also capable of breeding (and interbreeding) by about 6 wks of age. If allowed to go uncontrolled, interbreeding leads to physical deformity (internal as well as external), weakened immune systems (which leaves them open to many illness/disease issues), and death of females due to over breeding and ratio of male/female. Water temp helps to determine sex of the fry, so that is also something to keep an eye on. Adults will mate with fry if the fry are mature enough to do so. Guppies are great fish, but can get out of hand quickly.
A few other notes for you as a newbie here on FF.
When you post for help, please include water params for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH with your initial post. This saves time and a lot of questions that we repeatedly have to ask in order to help anyone.
Water testing is extremely important to healthy fish keeping, but not all test kits are known to be accurate. Working with liquid test kits or digital meters is always suggested. Test strips are basically useless, so avoid wasting your money on those, as the results from test strips will not help us to help you.
Patience is important. Here at FF there are many knowledgeable and experienced people to help you, but it can often take time to sort out a problem and find a safe resolution. Asking questions is what we do best here, so we can help you as quick and safely as possible, so please don't get annoyed if you ask for help and receive a list of questions in response. Also try to avoid acting too quickly on something. With fish keeping, patience is often the key to proper diagnosis and proper, safe, & effective treatments. (that means don't be too quick to go out and buy meds until you know for sure what med is needed and safe for the fish in the tank you are treating)
As badxgillen has already mentioned, FF works hard to keep things "nice" and friendly for everyone. We are a kid friendly community, so its important to mind our p's and q's when posting, to remember to respect each other, and to avoid "fights" in posts. If you have any problems with a member this is best handled by consulting with a moderator who can advise and offer help in difficult situations. Debates are always healthy and welcome as long as they remain friendly and respectful.
I hope you enjoy your time here on FF! Once again, welcome to the community!
Thanks for the welcomes.
I've learned most of the rules from reading around on the posts that are up so far thanks for the update bettababy :D I learned a few years ago the hazards of having to many guppies so now I have 2 females and a male in a main breeding tank and then another tank for them to give birth in (they usually give birth at about the same time) and them grow for about a month and then another one for them until they are big enough to move to their new homes with other people/pet shops. Photos will be coming soon as soon as I remember where I have put my digital camera. I hope to meet people from around the world and my community (if I can find anyone :p)
Sounds like you have a good grip on things. Thats great news!
You will surely meet people from around the world in this environment, but on that note, please also keep in mind that people in other areas have very different environments, including water chemistry, so what works for one person somewhere may not always work for another. This is something to take into account when giving as well as receiving advice anywhere online.
I look forward to seeing your photos and other contributions here at FF!
