How much java moss do I need?
I'm starting a new aquarium and trying to get everything nice and set up before I get fishes. Its a 75gal, I plan to have some community fishes (mostly egg scatterers) and red cherry shrimp. I want to have a tank with enough java moss that some of the fry may possibly survive, but I'd still like room for other unnatural, decorative pieces. How much java moss would be sufficient for that?

java moss grow at a slow rate.depending on how big a size of moss comes in each package and how much area you want planted with moss.you'll have to figure this one out by yourself.if you want a more finished look and can't wait for it to grow.buy lotsa moss.

I'd reccomend a few baseball-sized clumps... Fry will hide in other plants as well, and you may want to get something like water lettuce for surface cover. (Fry like to hide in the roots of water lettuce.)

Java moss will take a while but it depends on how many fry you will be hiding. Java moss can get expensive too especially if you want to buy in bulk but, if money is no object then go for it. lol it goes for about $5 a teaspoon plus shipping. But I didn't buy mine from teaspoon people. Find those people trimming their tanks and buy everything they got. Then when it grows too much in your tank you can turn a profit :) If you can't seem to find any I would recommend naja grass... if you are open to other plants. It grows faster and is very pretty.

I have tons, they start off great but once established they can be difficult to have to continue trimming all the time. I toss out tons every month cuz it just grows too much. They also break off and float around and then attach to something else, i have random bits of moss attached to rocks and wood all over my tank. :-/

I really must be lucky reading all this. Just last year I bought maybe about 1/4 cup Java moss to make a moss wall for my 10g (as a backslash kinda thing) as it was THIN in the beginning it grew real quick to fill out the whole long wall of the 10g in maybe 2 month. Now I'm at the stage I have tons moss extra floating around various tank that I just sell along with my other plants, so if you need some cheaper then the pet store let me know.

Mine grew like wild fire. I have it in so many spots on my tank. I don't feel like going through the hassle of selling I just sometimes try to give it away(got mine from a friend) didn't know it was worth anything LOL it just takes over half my tank if I don't pay attention. If I knew it was worth something I would have thrown so much in the compost  oh well

mine seems to grow pretty slowly. i think there must be lots of different species of moss being sold as java moss because I've seen some that looks a very different in structure to mine
i got tons of the stuff from ebay very cheaply
