Plants and Cichlids
Okay so everything I have been reading says that Cichlids will eat plants. But I am thinking of going with a 55 gallon tank with freshwater plants (which I absolutly love) and African Cichlids, does anybody have an experience with this because if they eat plants im not going to mess with them.
I'm assuming that by African cichlids you mean rift lake. They need hard basic (alkaline) water and many of our freshwater plants will not do well long-term. Vallisneria is an exception, it loves hard water; I had this plant with a few rift lake cichlids many years ago.
Depends upon which species; mbuna will eat plants if they are tender enough. They feed on algae. You could try plants like Anubias (which attach to rock) as the fish would graze algae from its leaves but likely not eat it, it is too tough. And it will manage in hard water that is not excessively hard.
I keep Onion Bulbs, Java Ferns, and Red Wenditi with my EBJD's and they are unharmed
