Suicidal Gourami?

Hi all,
I have decided to join this forum after over a month of observing my white gourami not eating anything. It used to be quite robust and aggressive, but one day it started to spit out its food. Later on, it would completely ignore the feed. Its behavior changed too, I noticed that it became a touch paler and skinnier, and more recessive and frightened by human presence after it stopped eating. I really have no idea why this came to be; I dutifully change the water accordingly (40g tank) and the ph levels and temperature seems to be relatively okay.

Does anyone have a clue as to what I should do?

can you provide details of the water parameters (ph, hardness, ammonia, nitrate, nitrite)? how long has the tank been set up? it sounds like the gourami is stressed, but it could be sick, i dont know. the more details you can give the better...
